Organised in partnership with the Directorate-General for Energy at the Commission (DG ENER), it was the first time Urenco had staged an event at the EUSEW and only the second event ever on nuclear in this forum.
Entitled, The role of nuclear energy in ensuring EU competitiveness and security of supply, the event highlighted the pivotal moment Europe is in concerning security of supply.
The panel, on June 11, focused on the important role of nuclear energy in Europe to help the continent achieve its climate goals under the Clean Industrial Deal, as well as the needs of the industry to ramp up its supply chains and achieve competitiveness with less Russian interference. This is in the context of the REPowerEU Roadmap published in May.
The panel featured our EU Director of Government Affairs, Hidde Bars; the Director for Nuclear Energy, Safety and ITER at DG ENER, Jan Panek; Dagmar Thien from Siemens Energy; and Young Energy Ambassador 2024 for nuclear, Amsatou Diop.
Hidde told the panel that the nuclear sector needed long-term regulatory certainty and stability to attract investment and drive Europe toward a cleaner, more competitive future.
He said: “Nuclear is often spoken of as a future plan, but it has already helped power Europe for decades – we have the industry infrastructure and competitive advantage to prove it.
"As the international scene evolves, we see now that Europe needs to focus on decarbonisation and competitiveness alike. The nuclear sector is investing and is ready to deliver, alongside renewables, to keep Europe competitive in a shifting global landscape. "
One message stood out from the panel: that Europe cannot afford to choose between decarbonisation, competitiveness, and energy security – all three are needed.
Jan Panek said: “Europe has been focused on balancing its decarbonisation, competitiveness and diversification objectives.
“The vision for the future of European energy is a balance of clean sources.
“Nuclear will be one of several such sources, and it will always be each Member State’s prerogative as to how they balance their energy mix. Europe has a competitive advantage in nuclear technologies and Europe, as a whole, can benefit from a stable nuclear sector.”
The panel was moderated by Brussels’ energy journalist for Euractiv, Stefano Porciello, and more than 100 people attended to watch in person while another 235 followed the event online.
