SMR challenges can be overcome together, conference hears

09 September 2025 Global News

Industry credibility going hand-in-hand with nuclear’s newly-found momentum was emphasised at the 50th World Nuclear Association (WNA) Symposium.

Urenco’s CEO Boris Schucht said that ‘as an industry, we have the momentum and it’s good to be agile, but we must not overpromise’.

Boris was speaking at an Executive Plenary panel on September 4 concerning nuclear entering new markets.

He highlighted the need for mass production of SMRs and better licensing processes to enable this new market but said the fuel cycle would be ready.

Additionally, he said collaboration in the industry was key and that the challenges ‘are too big for any country or company alone to overcome’.

Earlier, during the Symposium’s new Energy Summit on September 3, Urenco jointly presented the initial findings of an independent LucidCatalyst report on how SMRs could help meet industrial energy demand.

Head of Advanced Fuels, Commercial, Magnus Mori, explained how the highest demand would come from industries such as data centres, synthetic fuels for maritime and aviation, coal plant replacements and chemicals.

He was joined on stage by LucidCatalyst Managing Partner Kirsty Gogan.

Magnus stressed that ‘to deliver the energy needed to meet growing demand, nuclear needs to work across six key areas including more efficient manufacturing and licensing processes.’

The WNA Symposium took place in London from September 3 to 5 and Urenco was a silver level sponsor.
