Case study: Urenco’s partnerships to reduce biodiversity loss

We require these services to remain at a high quality, however nature and biodiversity loss put them at risk.
Nature decline can present physical risks to our operations such as reduced water availability for cooling, increased flooding, fires and climate extremes, as well as impacts on supply chains through resource scarcity.
Urenco is pursuing partnerships with nature programmes close to our sites to help restore biodiversity and enhance resilience in the natural environment.
In Cheshire, new woodlands are being created to enhance biodiversity, capture carbon and create natural spaces for future generations. At Badgers Rake Lane, near Capenhurst, work includes pond restoration and woodland planting alongside wildflower meadows. Urenco volunteers supported Cheshire West and Chester Council to plant a small community orchard earlier in 2026, which helps preserve some older Cheshire fruit varieties, while supplying local food share organisations and communities.
Our Head Office in London has partnered with the Canal & River Trust to support habitat creation at Brent Reservoir, a rare urban wetland and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Projects such as enhancing habitats for birds like Great Crested Grebes, invertebrates and fish - along with wildflower meadow planting - represent a long-term investment in protecting this important site.
